Every year, on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) launches a ‘Safe Ramadan’ campaign, giving the public cautionary advice to avoid problems during Ramadan at home or on the streets.

The aim of Safe Ramadan 2019 is to help the public have a safe Ramadan without any accidents at home, workplace or on the streets. To reach out to the public, MoI shares daily advice from the Safe Ramadan 2019 campaign on its social network channels and media.

This year’s Safe Ramadan advises the community in Qatar on the following:

At Home:

Protection from food poisoning

  • Check the validity of canned, frozen or preserved foodstuff. Make sure that there aren’t any changes in the foodstuff’s smell, colour or texture.

For this reason, please make sure that:

  • The foodstuff has been kept in a clean and closed place or in the refrigerator.
  • The place and the food are clean and neat whenever you dine out.

Protection from the fire in the kitchen

  • Closing gas stove once its use is over.
  • Do not leave a pan or pot on the stove for a long time unattended.
  • Switch on exhaust fans in kitchen

When a fire breaks out in the oil pan:

  • Avoid pouring water into an oil pan as it ignites the fire.
  • Cover the burning pan by placing the nearest thick lid on the pan or cover it with a fire blanket.

When a fire breaks out in the trash bin:

  • Cover the burning trash bin immediately with a damp cloth in order to prevent oxygen from igniting the fire.

Protection from the fire at home

  • Ensure that a good fire extinguisher is available at your home.
  • Don’t leave the children in the kitchen or near hot and burning materials or electrical power sources.
  • Don’t put on flowing dresses or nylon mixed wears in the kitchen in order to avoid catching fire.

When you smell a gas odour

  • Immediately open all doors and windows to reduce the concentration of leaked gas.
  • Never use a burning matchstick near a gas cylinder to locate the place of leakage.
  • Avoid switching on the exhaust fan for ventilation.
  • Don’t switch on lights as they may serve as points of ignition to the highly inflammable.

Note: Understand the proper use of fire extinguishers, safety and capacity of electrical cables, and safe LPG connector at the kitchen.

Traffic Safety:

  • Do not rush to reach your iftar destination. The time before iftar is considered as the most vulnerable time for traffic accidents during Ramadan.
  • Don’t let the children play in internal roads of the residential areas especially at night to ensure their safety from traffic accidents. Allow them to play only in designated playing areas.
  • Drive slow in crowded and residential areas.
  • Avoid parking vehicles in such a way that may obstruct traffic movement, especially during iftar gatherings or at the Mosque or Masjid during the prayer timings like taraweeh or thahajjud prayers.
  • Do not overtake incorrectly or push into traffic lines.
  • Do not park in slots reserved for people with special needs.
  • Avoid last day shopping for Eid. Finish it early enough to avoid traffic jam and parking in ‘no parking areas’ because of the rush.
  • When crossing the road, ensure that the road is completely free from both sides before crossing, especially during rush hours. Cross the road only through designated areas for crossing. Always remember you are responsible for your safety.

Begging:

  • Begging is reprehensible behaviour and illegal. If you see begging, report the case to the Anti-Begging Section by calling 234 7444 / 3361 8627.
  • The really needy people can approach authorised charity organisations in the country such as Qatar Charity, Qatar Red Crescent and other organisations for help.

In case of an emergency, call 999 immediately.
