Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) is Northwestern University’s 12th school and its only overseas campus. Based in Education City in Doha, Northwestern’s campus in Qatar offers undergraduate degree programs in communication and journalism, with foundation in the liberal arts.

As a partner with the Qatar Foundation, it collaborates with similar institutions in Education City including Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Georgetown, Texas A&M, and Virginia Commonwealth, and is part of what has been called “one of the most exciting educational collaborations in the world today.”

Northwestern also benefits from the cooperation and guidance of the university’s home campus in the U.S., particularly with its School of Communication; the Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications; and the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences.

The 2,500-acre Education City campus has exceptional facilities in sweeping modern buildings by world-class architects. Northwestern is preparing to move into its new building where it will have state-of-the-art digital media, broadcast, and film facilities in a dedicated studio building for information and entertainment productions. Its curriculum is guided by the U.S. higher education model and is cross-cultural as is its research agenda and outreach efforts. Students, faculty, and staff travel the globe with frequent trips to the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, and elsewhere.

Having graduated its fifth class of undergraduates, NU-Q continues to extend and strengthen its instructional and research activities, as well as educating the next generation of business leaders in the communication and media industries in Qatar, the Middle East, and the global community. Many of Northwestern’s graduates also pursue degrees from leading graduate schools around the world. Thirty-four percent of its graduates are now pursuing graduate degrees at institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Northwestern, Cornell, London School of Economics, and many others.

Northwestern operates in a venue where full academic freedom is guaranteed, with the goal of advancing freedom of expression in a rapidly changing part of the world. It builds on the legacy of Northwestern University, offering undergraduate degree programs from two of its most renowned schools. Few locations in the world today are more conducive to teaching excellence and innovative research, which can combine to make a difference in the lives of individuals, institutions, and a transitional society.
