With only a few days before the final match, the excitement in Qatar is also on the brim. If you’re a long-time football fan, chances are, you’ve chosen and are rooting for your favourite team. But if your team did not make it to the tournament, you can still choose to cheer for the next best team.
The draw to determine the group in which each of the 32 qualified teams will play at the start of the tournament took place in December last year in Moscow. The teams were divided into four ‘pots’ of eight, with one team selected from each pot to form a group.
All pots were determined by each team’s October 2017 FIFA World Ranking. Pot 1 contains host Russia and the seven highest-ranked teams that qualify for the tournament, with the second pot consisting of the second-highest ranked teams, and the third and fourth pot, with the remaining teams. The draw sequence started with Pot 1 and ended with Pot 4.
According to the FIFA rankings, the strongest group is E, followed by F, B, C, D, G, H. The weakest by far is group A.
