In January 2024, 24 national teams from across Asia will travel to Qatar to compete in the continent’s most prestigious football competition.
This will be the third time Qatar hosts the competition, having successfully organised previous editions in 1988 and 2011. The 18th edition of the tournament will see reigning champions Qatar defending the title they won in 2019. Qatar will be aiming to become only the fifth team to win back-to-back AFC Asian Cup™ titles and attempt to do what has only been achieved once in the previous seven editions – win the title on home soil. Australia are the last team to have done so in 2015.
Between 12 January and 10 February 2024, a total of 51 matches will be played at nine stadiums. The opening match between hosts and defending champions Qatar and Lebanon will be played at the Lusail Stadium, with a seating capacity of over 80,000 spectators. The venue hosted the final match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, and will also host the final match of the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023TM.
As seen during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, the farthest distance between stadiums is just 75 km, enabling fans to attend more than one match a day. Visiting fans can stay in one venue throughout the tournament, using the modern road infrastructure and metro network to effortlessly travel around the country. Approximately 6,000 volunteers will be recruited to offer support across 20 functional areas.
Women will referee at the men’s Asian Cup for the first time, and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will also make its debut at the tournament.
All tickets for the AFC Asian Cup Qatar 2023TM will be digital, which can be shown from any mobile device – as they can be downloaded to Apple, Samsung or Google Pay digital wallets, internet connectivity at the stadium is not required. Each ticket contains a unique code that is scanned at the event. This paper free experience is Qatar’s continuing commitment to delivering sustainable tournaments. More than 150,000 tickets were sold in the first batch.
