Ambassador of the Republic of Gambia, HE Foday Malang, delivers seedlings of his country’s national tree to be planted at Qur’anic Botanic Garden
Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QBG), the first garden in the world to exhibit all plant species mentioned in the Holy Qur’an, Hadith and Sunnah, was paid a special visit by HE Foday Malang, Ambassador of the Republic of Ghana to Qatar, earlier this month.
Ambassador Malang personally delivered ten seedlings of his country’s national tree, Gmelina Arborea, exclusively brought in from the Republic of Gambia to be planted at QBG during an upcoming event that forms part of QBG’s Ghars campaign.
The seedlings are currently being stored at the QBG conservation centre in preparation for the ceremony. They will be planted by his wife, Madame Ambassador SW Ndow at QBG’s African Women’s Diplomatic Garden. Currently, the garden hosts a variety of trees from ten African countries.
Ambassador Malang was given a tour of the QBG facilities, including the seed bank, herbarium, botanical museum collection, germination laboratories, and plant nurseries. The Gambian Embassy in Qatar said that the ambassador himself was trained and worked in the plant sciences and left the facility impressed with the set-up, processes and motivation of the QBG team. He expressed his appreciation for QBG’s efforts in preserving the environment and conserving Arab and Islamic heritage. QBG is a member of Qatar Foundation.
QBG’s tree-planting campaign
A number of embassies around the country have also recognised the important role that QBG plays in environmental conservation and restoration, taking an active part in QBG’s Ghars tree-planting campaign and other activities. These embassies include that of the UK, Russia, Turkey and India. In addition, Mali, Djibouti, South Africa, and Senegal, also helped launched QBG’s African Women’s Diplomatic Garden early last year – a first in the country – in celebration of Qatar Environment Day.
More information on upcoming events, competitions and activities can be found on QBG’s social media channels. Visit qbg.org.qa for more details.
