According to Qatar’s Information Guide, Marhaba, a ‘Business lunch’ could be a leisurely relaxed lunch outing with colleagues and friends or a speedy seal-the-deal affair with customers or suppliers.
Waldorf Astoria is literally one of the best hotels on the planet and it follows that if you’re not part of a large corporate top management team you may think either the price or the atmosphere may be a little elevated for people with everyday budget concerns.
With three courses at QAR97 per person, this deal is really in the region of a bargain and is on a par with most anywhere in Doha. And, while the Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay is certainly a distinguished and luxurious building, the professional atmosphere and staff are most welcoming and friendly.
Your first surprise comes as you are seated at the (marble) table and you peruse the menu. There are three separate lunch choices and each one has a choice of two main courses and two desserts. It’s the perfect place for those with differing food preferences but discerning taste. So healthy or somewhat decadent, it’s your choice…
Having made your choice of dish, the second surprise is to find how generous are the servings (not to mention the excellent loaf of sourdough bread to start, with its three interesting dips). Indeed portions are big enough to share, so the three of us were able to enjoy three different starters (refreshing fish, munchable meat and a very palatable plant-based portion of goodness), plus of course main courses and desserts. Believe it or not, the menu (inspired by new Chef Claudio) includes caviar and lobster, the crispy quinoa is as pleasing aesthetically as it is good for your health, and the lasagna is modelled on the traditional lasagna recipe from the famous Arnaldo restaurant in Italy, holding a Michelin star since 1959. The seabass was deliciously delicate, and the braised beef cheek was so obviously slow cooked for so many hours to achieve a level of satisfaction on the sensory scale that Chef Claudio seems to accomplish on all these exquisite dishes.
Descent into decadence may just happen when you are tempted by beautiful desserts, like the pretty pannacotta and the cutest cannoli, both sweet and succulent; but there is always a seasonal fruit platter with berries to keep you on the slim but safe road…
Yes, indeed. This ‘business lunch’ turned out to be almost a sumptuous feast, plus my wallet wasn’t hurting but my palate and taste buds were glowing.
