Msheireb Museums recently hosted the first-ever Local Conference of Youth – LCOY Qatar 2023, organised by the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar (AYCMQ) in partnership with the US Embassy Doha and Generation Amazing. The event represents a milestone in the nation’s commitment to youth-led climate action.
LCOY Qatar 2023 is the first-ever event of its kind to be hosted in Qatar and is part of the official children and youth constituency of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The two-day event was designed by youth, for youth to help inspire the next generation of young people to make their voices heard when it comes to climate action. Speakers and attendees included Generation Amazing Executive Director Nasser Al-Khori and US Ambassador to Qatar, HE Timmy Davis.
According to Msheireb Museums Manager Abdulla Al Naama, they are proud to welcome the next generation of innovators and change-makers to Msheireb Museums in this important event, where young people can connect and inspire one another to make a change when it comes to engaging in climate action and global cooperation.
He said that Msheireb Museums aims to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and a sustainable future and is itself a thriving example of smart conservation.
The conference emphasises the crucial link between cultural heritage and sustainable development, and by hosting LCOY Qatar, we seek to contribute to a holistic understanding of Qatar’s history and its role in shaping a sustainable world for our future.
Commitments to the Paris Agreement
The event featured sessions and workshops organised by youth, exploring the impacts of climate change and highlighting solutions to meet the commitments of the Paris Agreement. The conference aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Action Plan, positioning youth as leaders in driving transformative change.
US Ambassador to Qatar, HE Timmy Davis, said that confronting the climate crisis requires unprecedented global cooperation, with a shared sense of urgency and imagination. He said that the coming decades will be decisive.
Qatar’s youth have a critical opportunity today to shape tomorrow for the world. That is why the US Embassy is a long-term partner of the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar and why we supported Qatar’s Local Conference of Youth this week.
AYCM co-founder Hessa Al Noaime said they continue to strive to nurture an educated, collaborative and action-driven community in Qatar that works effectively to address this global concern and are thankful to all supporters for believing in the initiative.
The conference is an educational hub, fostering knowledge exchange and empowering young minds to actively engage in climate action. Msheireb Museums served as a platform for dialogue around sustainable infrastructure development.
Nestled with the world’s first sustainably regenerated downtown, Msheireb Museums is a collection of four historic houses that embody the importance of sustainability in cultural development.
