Now on its third week, the General Directorate of Traffic continues the”Accident-free summer” campaign. A press conference was held at the Traffic headquarters on Sunday 22 July 2018 to announce the theme for the third week, “For your safety, wear seatbelt”.
The theme highlights the role of seatbelts in preserving the lives of drivers and front seat passengers.
Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Mohammed Al Humaidi, Head of the Traffic Department of the North, said that not wearing seatbelts results in severe injuries and deaths. He stressed the importance of raising awareness of the importance of seatbelt while driving. According to survey, one of the major causes of death in Qatar is when a passenger gets thrown out of the car due to not wearing a seatbelt. Safety belts reduce the risk of death and serious injury.
The General Directorate of Traffic is working to preserve the lives of the public, with the objective to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on the roads. It also aims to further reduce the number of violations. This has been visible in the past two weeks, as the violation of using phone while driving has decreased to 340 in a week.
The Directorate has also launched a civil patrol equipped with a modern radar device to cover the external roads and the internal roads where there are many complaints coming from. The radar inside the car can catch over-speeding cars during the patrol.
Traffic Patrol Captain Shabib Mohammed Al Nuaimi pointed out that the new radar in vehicles (civilian and military) has several modern technical features. It operates on the move and adopts infrared (IR) imaging. The new technology does not use annoying flashlights. The speed sensor is invisible to the front of the patrol car and is capable to shoot the cars in both directions, in different weather conditions, and in six tracks. Each patrol car is equipped with control devices. Patrol officers can adjust the speed limit for large and small vehicles, as well as identify the street number. It can also capture photos and videos.
