The Cultural Village Foundation – Katara is organising a Hayya Baya event this Thursday, 30 July, from 5 pm to 8 pm, at the Katara Beach, from Gate 12 to Gate 21.
The event comes as part of Katara’s continuing effort to revive Qatar’s folk heritage and instil customs and traditions that mirror the Qatari identity. Katara assures that the Hayya Baya Festival will follow all safety precautions to avoid possible transmission of COVID-19.
The festival will have two main events featuring the Doll House and the distribution of balloons. Katara is keen, through these activities, to nurture culture in children, in relation to ancient folk traditions. These, hopefully, will contribute to preserving the Qatari heritage and at the same time, presenting enjoyable acitvities for kids.
Hayya Baya is a popular annual folk tradition in the Gulf region. Children gather in the beginning of the month for Dhu al-Hijjah, and every child brings an empty box or small wicker basket, where some grains of barley, wheat or lentils are planted, suspended in a safe place exposed to air and sunlight, and the child undertakes to irrigate them and take care of them. This is an important part of the popular custom.
