Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will host the 9th edition of the GCC Sports Tournament for Universities and Higher Education Institutes, after they were selected by the Committee of Deans of Student Affairs for Universities in the Arab Gulf during its 32nd meeting in Oman last February.
The committee was under the umbrella of the Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and attended by 37 GCC universities and educational institutes.
The tournament which is scheduled next year from 4 to 10 February 2023, will bring together students to compete in six sports – football, volleyball, table tennis, padel, athletics, and swimming.
A milestone in student sports
According to Dr Maryam Bint Hamad Al-Mannai, Vice President of Student Affairs at HBKU, the tournament is one of the most prominent sporting event for GCC countries. More than 20 universities and educational institutes are expected to participate. All competitions will be held on the sports grounds and facilities within Education City and at Aspire Zone Foundation, the logistics partner for the tournament.
Tournament Manager Faisal Al-Mohannadi said that all parties concerned are committed to holding a special and exceptional edition in February. This sports tournament has always been of paramount importance because of its positive and tangible impact that directly reflects the depth of the relationship between the people of the GCC.
From this standpoint, HBKU will ensure that the next edition will constitute a milestone in the history of student sports in GCC countries.
Mohammed Bin Hamad Altuwaijry, Head of Higher Education at the Secretariat General of the GCC also expressed their thanks to HBKU for the school’s generous hospitality and warm welcome.
The tournament’s Supervisory Committee conducted multiple meetings where they discussed plans for the tournament. They also had a tour of the sports grounds and the state-of-the-art facilities.
