The 2019 All-New MG 6 – the sporty fastback from Qatar’s fast-growing brand MG
The MG 6 is sure to make heads turn with its outstanding design and quality finish, enhanced by luxury metallic and pearlescent paints. On first acquaintance, you think the car is a sedan, but then you realise it’s a sporty fastback — beautiful lines with a huge sloping back windshield that opens wide to reveal a cavernous cargo space.
Now in its third generation, the new 2019 MG 6 model has been upgraded with multiple premium and sporty features whilst delivering class-leading comfort plus performance and efficiency.
DESIGN & STYLE
The clever designers have given the MG 6 a more premium look with quality design features normally found on luxury brands. Design cues like the sporty front grille, LED headlights, power strakes on the bonnet (hood), the bold character lines along the side are very European. Add to that the large ‘MG’ badge, the upmarket chrome accents around the windows, the twin exhausts, the 18-inch dual-colour alloys, and it’s easy to mistake this for a premium-brand offering. It’s also reassuring to note that the quality continues ‘under the skin’. The doors are well made and close with a solid ‘thunk’.
COMFORT & SPACE
All the MGs I have driven have had fabulous leather interiors – really well done, double stitching, high quality, up there with the old-name and well-established luxury cars. The red leather contrasting with black trim is amazing. Available in three versions, the MG 6 is no exception; my first drive was in the standard model and it was great.
The mid-level is even better and the top deluxe model is fantastic. The cockpit is also fitted with sporty elements, like carbon-fibre-type panels and aluminium pedals, and very handy gearshift lever. It’s also packed with the latest in-car technology: a large 8-inch full-colour touch-screen infotainment system sits in the middle of the dashboard, which can be operated from the multi-function leather steering wheel. Apple CarPlay, push start button, keyless entry, sporty digital dials, six speakers, tyre pressure monitoring system and rear parking camera are all offered as standard
The air conditioning turbo vents at the front are designed to circulate the cool air evenly throughout the cabin, cooling the vehicle faster. The airflow is seamless so passengers in the rear enjoy instant cooling too. Plus, there’s a coolbox right under the driver’s arm. Isn’t that cool? Literally! This is a fastback sedan with the boot space of an SUV. The spacious boot can even be extended from 424 litres to 1170 litres with a 40:60 split of the back seats. Make room for even more. In fact, the MG 6 has 22 storage features within easy reach. Tablets, phones, sunglasses, wallets; there’s space for everything
POWER & PERFORMANCE
The MG 6 is powered by a powerful 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, paired to a seven-speed automatic with paddle shifters and the above-mentioned manual gearstick. The small-displacement turbo engine is a modern development, embraced by all manufacturers in order to maximise power while minimising consumption.
• Max Power 169 HP or 124 KW @ 5,600 rpm
• Max Torque 250 Nm @ 4,300 rpm
• Acceleration from 0 – 100 kph in around 7 seconds
SAFETY & SECURITY
The new MG 6 with C-NCAP 5 Star Safety Rating brings you dual frontal, side-chest and side-head curtain airbags as standard.
Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake distribution (EBD) and electronic stability control (ESC) also come standard for optimum security.
C-NCAP is the Chinese official safety rating and is primarily modeled on safety standards established by Euro NCAP. Expect to see it more often as Chinese influence grows in the auto world.
The SCS (stability control system) determines the vehicle’s travel condition via sensors and stabilises the car by stopping the corresponding wheel, to prevent accidents caused by the loss of control. Get even more peace of mind with the Standard Active Safety Features like rearview camera and ISOFIX Auto Hold Electronic Handbrake.
Based on looks alone, the MG 6’s classy styling makes this car a winner. The plush interior and the array of features further make that case. The handling, meanwhile, is more than suitable for daily driving. It’s easy to mistake this for a premium-brand offering. In fact, more than once, friends asked if it was a luxury car. And then, just to completely confuse them, you have to see the look on their faces when they hear the price.
