The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC) is planning to start a trial for the Automatic Rapid Transit (ART) – an innovative, modern and environment-friendly public transport system.
With intelligent controls, ART is a rail-less system for urban transport which is essentially a crossover between buses and trams. It also integrates electrical and mechanical systems.
The trial in Qatar for the ART system will be the first in the world after it has been in operation in China, the manufacturing country. The trial will start on Al Khor Expressway and will continue for a period of time. This trial will be assessed by MOTC to make sure that ART fits Qatar’s weather conditions before going ahead with its deployment.
The new system, if successful, will support the diversification of transportation sector in Qatar using the world’s latest transportation system with advanced technology. This contributes to achieving economic and environmental balance in the transportation sector’s infrastructure projects.
It would also offer an exceptional experience for fans and visitors during the FIFA World Cup 2022 with high-quality services that provide smooth mobility to stadiums, residences and tourist spots.
This initiative comes as part of MOTC’s endeavours to provide a world-class, multimodal integrated transportation system that connects all areas and regions in Qatar, helping the public reach all vital areas easily with safe and reliable services in line with the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030. In addition, this system will also significantly contribute to developing different transportation modes in Qatar following the latest eco-friendly universal systems.
