The Hamilton International School’s last production of Matilda Jr. took the stage by storm, with four sold-out shows and over 1,900 attendees in the Hamilton Theatre.
Directed by the school’s Drama Teacher, Carol Hughes, and supported by the Doha Players, this performance marked a significant milestone in the school’s ongoing commitment to excellence in the performing arts.
Students shone in their roles, embodying the beloved characters from Roald Dahl’s classic story. The success of Matilda Jr. has set a new standard for Hamilton’s arts programme, highlighting their mission to inspire creativity, confidence, and collaboration through music, theatre, and the arts. With one of the best theatres in Qatar, the school takes pride in fostering an environment where students can express themselves and develop their talents.
Carol Hughes, Musical Director of the production and Drama Teacher at The Hamilton International School, shares her reflections on the Matilda Jr. production: ‘It’s been such an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. As the Musical Director of the show, my role was to bring the music to life, weaving melodies into the fabric of our storytelling. Guiding our talented cast and crew through rehearsals was a joy, and seeing Roald Dahl’s beloved characters come to life on stage was truly magical. The dedication and professionalism of our students were inspiring, and their performances surpassed all expectations. I am incredibly proud of the work we’ve done together.’
Carol continued, ‘A special thank you to the Doha Players—George and Vicky Coleman—for their unwavering support, and to our Parent Council members Taryn Franke, Hilde-Mari Strydom, Rachel Senior, and Dima Alaas for their invaluable help in making this production a resounding success.’
As the school celebrates the success of last year’s Matilda Jr., they are looking forward to the next big production – Shrek the Musical JR., which promises to be bigger, better, and more magical than ever before. Students will once again take the stage, bringing to life the iconic characters of Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and others in an unforgettable theatrical experience. With enhanced sets, larger-than-life visuals, and even more breathtaking performances, this upcoming production will be a true celebration of creativity and talent.
‘We’ve learned so much from Matilda Jr., and we’re excited to push the boundaries even further with Shrek the Musical JR.,’ said Carol. ‘This new production will be an incredible opportunity for our students to showcase their talents in even more spectacular ways. We can’t wait to share it with the community and continue building upon our arts programme.’
