Qatar-based start-up Modaris was recently recognised by the Red Herring Top 100 Asia Award, in recognition of the start up’s innovative technology. Modaris was presented the award by Alex Vieux, CEO and Chairman of Red Herring.
Established in September 2015 by Yasmin Kassem and Haitham Al Haidari, Modaris is an EdTech platform that connects home-tutors to students. Since then, Modaris has been home to over 5,000 tutors, supporting thousands of students in four countries – Qatar, Australia, Turkey, and Malaysia. Over 11,000 subjects are searched every month on Modaris.
Data allows the start up to clearly understand the problems students face and build new tools to empower tutors and students. Tutors have access to data that can help them find students efficiently. They can find the demand for each of their subjects in their area, and at what price students are booking their tutors. Other tutoring platforms seem to lack this feature.
Haitham said that with data, we can reshape the tutoring space all over the world today. Users can access services that empower them like never before. He said that they are excited to be at the forefront of this revolution. Yasmin, meanwhile, added that they are able to make informed decisions and provide users with incremental value.
I believe this feature is the main factor behind us winning Top 100 Asia, 2019.’
Red Herring Top 100 Asia enlists outstanding entrepreneurs and promising companies. It selects the award winners from approximately 1,000 privately financed companies each year in Asia. Since 1996, Red Herring has kept tabs on these up-and-comers. Red Herring editors were among the first to recognise that companies such as Google, Facebook and YouTube would change the way we live and work.
Red Herring’s editorial staff evaluate companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria. This assessment of potential is complemented by a review of track record and standing of start ups relative to their sector peers.
