Qatar Chamber Chairman HE Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim Al Thani recently presided over the Board of Directors meeting with Mohamed Hassan Al Obaidly, Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs at the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA).
The meeting touched on many topics including the recently issued laws regarding the minimum wage for workers and domestic workers, and facilitating changing jobs for expatriate employees. They also discussed the challenges facing the private sector. The meeting was attended by Qatar Chamber General Manager Saleh bin Hamad Al Sharqi.
Sheikh Khalifa underscored the importance of boosting cooperation and coordination between Qatar Chamber and MADLSA to address the obstacles and challenges faced by private companies.
According to Al Obaidly, the ministry is keen on supporting business owners and the private sector, as well as the interests of labourers. He praised the cooperation of the committee, noting that the two entities are jointly reviewing the obstacles facing the private sector.
Al Obaidly outlined details of the new amendments. He said that the reforms aim to improve the conditions of expatriate workers in the state.
With regards to amendments to facilitate changes in the workplace, he said that there are three controls for changing jobs which would ensure the interests of both the employee and the employer – notification, non-competition and compensation.
He said that the State of Qatar has been highly praised by many countries and international organisations after the issuance of these laws and amendments.
Qatar Chamber and MADLSA agreed to form the joint committee to discuss the issues facing the private sector. The committee will be responsible to iron out all issues and obstacles involving the private sector in relation to the ministry’s competencies.
