The third edition of the Qatar Chamber SME Conference kicks off this Monday at the Sheraton Grand Doha Resort and Convention Hotel. Held under the patronage of HE Ali bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, Minister of Commerce and Industry, the event is organised in cooperation with the British Embassy in Qatar.
The two-day conference aims to enhance the private sector’s role in the economic development of Qatar. It focuses on small and medium entereprises from the United Kingdom, which has the 6th largest national economy in the world, and where SME accounts for over 90% of all UK companies, and are among the most innovative in the world.
The event also seeks to increase trade between Qatar and the UK. There will be a B2B opportunity on the sidelines of the conference, allowing Qatari businessmen to meet with their British counterparts.
Qatar Development Bank CEO Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, said the bank’s support to the event represents the support exerted by the bank to develop the SME sector in Qatar and boost the capabilities of Qatari entrepreneurs.
He said that the conference offers a good opportunity for helping entrepreneurs build successful businesses that support the economic diversification strategy in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
The conference’s first session ‘Law and Investment’ will provides an overview of the SME Sector in the UK and Qatar, including a discussion on the rules and regulations surrounding businesses in the UK, the implications to the UK market after BREXIT, as well as the current business opportunities in the UK for Qatari business and vice versa.
It will also touched on the UK and Qatar business and regulatory environment, including tax regulations, talents and why UK and Qatar are both ideal investment destinations and great places for SME to develop.
The second session ‘Sports and Tourism’ will in turn discuss the opportunities for SME within the Sports Economy and Tourism sectors in Qatar. It will covers the future of Qatar’s sports sector up to and beyond the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It will also highlight the experience of the UK after it hosted the Olympic Games in 2012 and how sports infrastructure can be transformed to be a legacy for all.
The third session ‘Connected Qatar’ will explore opportunities that exist in Qatar for SME, including an overview of the country’s tech scene, connectivity and #TASMU programme led by the Ministry of Transport.
The fourth session will focus on the rules, regulations and practicalities of doing business in Qatar.
