Qatar rose from 18th place to 12th place in the World Competitiveness Ranking, following the recent release of the latest report by the World Competitiveness Center of the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland.
The ranking, which places Qatar at number 12 out of 64 countries, is based on a mixture of hard data – 164 competitiveness criteria selected as a result of comprehensive research using economic literature, international, national, and regional sources, plus feedback from the business community, government agencies and academics – and 92 survey questions answered by 6,400 senior executives.
Hard data accounts for two-thirds of the overall ranking results, whereas the survey data represents one-third.
Areas where Qatar ranked high in the report included economic performance (ranked 5), government efficiency (ranked 4), business efficiency (ranked 12), and infrastructure (ranked 33).
Qatar’s rank has been positively influenced by many factors including strong economic performance, as represented by Qatar’s low unemployment rate, youth employment, population growth, collected personal income tax, consumption tax rate, and cyber security, in which Qatar ranked first in the world.
Denmark (1), Ireland (2) and Switzerland (3) are the top three economies in the World Competitiveness Ranking. Other countries included in the top ten are Singapore (4), The Netherlands (5), Taiwan and China (6), Hongkong (7), Sweden (8), the USA (9) and the UAE (10).
