‘Sunday Roast‘ is a traditional British family meal where the whole household assembles to enjoy at least one meal together in a week. As the name implies, there is a lot of roasting involved. It could be roast chicken, beef or lamb, accompanied by traditional British roast vegetables like potatoes, carrots and parsnips, and probably some boiled cabbage, peas and/or sprouts as well. It wouldn’t be complete without Yorkshire Puddings, which would be an easy way of adding bulk to the meal and also an excellent way of mopping up any surplice gravy.
In the past, meat was an expensive luxury, so all the roast and boiled vegetables along with lashings of gravy were used to turn a few slices of meat into a large dinner capable of sending the whole family to sleep on a Sunday afternoon – it’s a tradition I grew up in, and still continued even when I had my own family.
Hudson Tavern at the luxurious Mondrian Doha has taken the spirit of the Great British Sunday Roast, except they hold it every Saturday, and to their own style. We, the lucky Marhaba team, were once again invited to try it.
Starter was a fresh green salad served with breadcrumbed cheese sticks, chicken wings and dips. The serving was fairly sized, and we were offered more salad if we wanted it. This was an excellent way to get the meal underway.
The main is, of course, the star feature – a sumptuous roast dinner. Hudson Tavern has swapped out slices of roast beef for a succulent ribeye steak that is cooked to your liking, and to be sure you have enough meat on your plate, they included roast chicken as well (major bonus). There were roast carrots and parsnips cooked al dente for some texture in your vegetables. There also were green beans, tomatoes, roast potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings, and the delicious gravy. The portion of the gravy could be better to cover what’s served in the plate, but fret not – that was resolved very quickly when I uttered the famous words of Oliver Twist: ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’
For dessert, it was one of my all-time favourites, Apple Crumble – another great British dish served with ice cream.
Hudson Tavern has a wonderful ambiance – cosy and oozing with character. We felt very at home in there. They also played some great 80’s tunes (not just the mainstream 80’s music, but songs that were a little further down the charts back then and less heard these days), which I absolutely loved. They put on a playlist that is much harder to create – something I appreciated very much.
The venue was quite busy, and I could see and hear that the other tables were having a great time as well.
The food was delicious and an absolute bargain at just QAR125 per person (food only). There is also a food and beverage package available at just QAR250 per person (valid for 2 hours).
