Twenty-year-old piano soloist Eric Lu won first place and the Dame Fanny Waterman Gold Medal at the triennial event, regarded as one of the most coveted prizes in the musical world. He also won the Terence Judd Hallé Orchestra Prize. In addition to the £25,000 cash prize, Lu receives a portfolio prize designed and set for a long-term career development.
Six months ago, Lu played Frederic Chopin’s First Piano Concerto in his Doha debut. He won the Leeds Piano Competition, first prize in the International German Piano Award and the US National Chopin Competition. He first came to international attention when he won the second prize at the Warsaw Chopin Competition at the age of 17. Now 20, he will play the Brahms First Concerto with Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra on 13 October, at the Qatar National Convention Centre.
