‘Hell of a Book’
Jason Mott
Awarded as National Book Foundation’s 2021 prize for fiction, Hell of a Book by New York Times bestselling author Jason Mott is described as a masterful novel that broke new ground.
The novel interweaves the narratives of an African-American author on his first book tour (drawing on Mott’s own experiences), and a young black boy nicknamed Soot, who is relentlessly bullied by other children because of the darkness of his skin. Soot, who uncannily resembles a recent victim of police violence, continuously pops up during the book tour leading the nameless author to recall his own repressed trauma as a bullied Black boy in North Carolina. As the two storylines build and converge, the book becomes more and more poignant. And as the title says, this one is a hell of a book that touches every point on the emotional spectrum.
