US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry paid a visit to Qatar Petroleum’s Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) recently. He was accompanied by Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Sada, the Minister of Energy and Industry, and Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the President and CEO of Qatar Petroleum.
The visit included a tour of the RLIC gas, refining and export facilities and logistics centres, and a briefing on the various aspects of industrial development in the city and the services it provides to ensure the free, safe, and unhindered flow of Qatar energy products to the world.
The visiting US Energy Secretary and his delegation were also briefed on the history of Ras Laffan City and its port, which is considered the world’s largest LNG export port, and which helps boost Qatar’s leading position as the world’s largest LNG producer and exporter, in addition to being the gateway for Qatari hydrocarbon products to the rest of the world. The tour included a presentation of the various industrial projects operating in Ras Laffan and of the production capabilities achieved by Qatar Petroleum, particularly in the LNG industry, which has given greater credibility and reliability to Qatar’s oil and gas industry.
Ras Laffan Industrial City is located 80 kilometres northeast of Doha, and is the base of all the onshore operations that support the development and utilisation of Qatar’s North Field gas assets. It commenced operations in 1996 by initially providing land, infrastructure and port facilities to Qatargas 1. Since then, RLIC has evolved into a world-class industrial city, facilitating the needs of the most technologically sophisticated natural gas-based industries.
RLIC provides industries with land, roads and common corridors for pipelines and other utility structures. The Ras Laffan Port, which is the largest LNG export facility in the world, facilitates the marine export of all the hydrocarbons and sulfur produced by the industries and the import of general cargo, and supports the offshore production operations in the North Field. RLIC also provides industries with various utilities, such as desalinated water, potable water, power, telecom, seawater through the common seawater facility, as well as municipal waste treatment and disposal.
